For your next STEM adventure, use Systems Thinking on Planting a Garden as a Little Biologist Game!
40 minutes
By the end of this game, children will be able to:
Learn Biology
Learn Analyzing
4-9 year olds
You love gardening and want raising kids who love gardening. This game is for your children to do together. Together, you are able to plant seeds, water and wait to see how it grows. Gardening is an activity you can enjoy with your children. Teach your child how to plant a flower, plan on allowing him to do most of the work involved.
Take all of the necessary supplies and explain each one of them to your child. Show your children the seeds, and let your children know that all of the food the flower needs is inside. Explain your children that plants need soil, water, sun and air to grow.
Allow your child to fill the flower pots with soil. Have him poke a hole in the center of each pile of dirt with his finger and drop in one or two seeds, and then cover over the seed with the soil.
Show your child how to tilt the watering can to water the flower seeds without spilling the water. Have her put the flower pots in a sunny window.
Have him check each day to see whether a sprout is emerging. Continue encouraging your child to care for his plants. He may enjoy measuring the plant each day of what his flowers look like as the days go on and use line graph to add. X axis and y axis to draw. X axis should be the day. For example, day 1, day 2, day 3. Y axis, should be the heights of apple tree.
Doctorate in Education
Originally from Turkey, then Pittsburgh, now California
I got my doctorate in educating kids how to code, and how to think computationally so they can thrive in STEM. I have been researching how Offline Activities -- where kids aren't in front of a screen, but are playing in the real world -- can help kids get core concepts of coding.
Biology is all about studying life and living organisms. This activity teaches your children living processes, and what plants need to grow and analyze growing process of plants.
