This backtrack for lost object actvity helps you and your assistant to find it computationally step by step.
40 minutes
4-10 year olds
You're stressed to find the lost item. No worries, your child will assist you to find the item logically and computationally. You're going to play this game with your kid to teach them how to look back step by step and backtrack the scenarios. Visualize what has been happened before item disappear. You and your child plan and apply backtracking approach of computational thinking.
This activity starts with the time your kid lost something, such as, helmet for riding scooter, toys for playground games, shoes for running at the beach or books for school. However, he/she doesn’t remember at all.
Your job is not trying to find by yourself, but, investigate with your child. Not a leader, by facilitating, scaffolding, and assisting your child.
Dump it out time! (Perhaps the most satisfying part.) Have your kid dump their backpack out -- everything everywhere, nothing in the bag!
Ask your child where did he/she had his object last time, was it this morning, yesterday night, any questions are open-ended based on the situation, day, and time all about losing related questions.
You are welcome to have a piece of paper and let your child draw if he/she is not able to write or read.
If she/he know she/she is welcoming to write and draw as well whatever he/she feels more comfortable. The best way is the whatever she/he feels more comfortable.
.Prompt questions, writing and drawing makes his/her lost object to be more visualized, now.
Now ask more questions about does he/she check playground today, did he/she check garage or let him/her check the garage, maybe, it is in the room. Let him/her check it.
Now make the final cut! Refine that list down to what should go in the bag, what shouldn't.
Also, has he/she ever lost before, if so, where it was, maybe same place, let him/her check again.
Allow your child to reflect, review and rethink the process of backtracking. How many days, weeks, or months has your child think about the item that lost. Why does he/she start the specific time of backtracking?
After finding, let him/her ask what he/she should do to put safe place.
Doctorate in Education
Originally from Turkey, then Pittsburgh, now California
I got my Doctorate in educating kids how to code, and how to think computationally so they can thrive in STEM. I have been researching how Offline Activities -- where kids aren't in front of a screen, but are playing in the real world -- can help kids get core concepts of coding.
In this activity, your child learn the metacognition and higher order thinking process that empower and foster child's learning skills, including long term memory, problem solving, heuristic reasoning, and attention.
